Twins top red sox 5-4 on 2-run single in 9th by brooks lee after 90-minute rain delay

Brooks Lee hit a two-run single off Jordan Hicks in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox after a 90-minute rain delay Monday night. After Roman Anthony put Boston in front with an RBI single off Twins closer Jhoan Duran (6-4) in the top of the ninth, the grounds crew hustled out the tarp to beat a downpour. Hicks (1-7), who had warmed up before the delay, allowed a single to DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and hit Mickey Gasper and Willi Castro with consecutive pitches. With one out, Lee delivered his third walk-off hit this season with a slap the other way with a few hundred fans standing in front of soaked seats. Alex Bregman homered for the second straight game–a three-run shot off Simeon Woods Richardson in the fifth that put Boston up 3-2 after another unfulfilling start by Richard Fitts. Fitts allowed a two-run homer to Keirsey after walking Christian Vázquez to start the third. Keirsey, making his first start in 29 games with All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton (ribcage irritation) sidelined, is 9 for 75 this season. Vázquez has been batting under .200 for six weeks. The Red Sox, who are in the market for starting pitching with Hunter Dobbins done for the season, were thin in the bullpen with closer Aroldis Chapman unavailable (back tightness) and another reliever Garrett Whitlock ailing after a turbulent flight to Minnesota required a pit stop during stormy weather. The Twins traded starting pitcher Chris Paddack to division-leading Detroit before the game. Key moment: Fitts skirted bases-loaded trouble with none out in the fourth, striking out Ty France and getting Vázquez to ground into a double play. Key stat: Anthony, who has taken over the leadoff spot for good, had two hits and two walks. Up next: Lucas Giolito (6-2, 3.97 ERA) starts for Boston on Tuesday when Paddack was scheduled to pitch. Minnesota will staff it with the bullpen instead.

July 14 - Jose Fermin hit his first big league homer, a two-run shot, to lift the St. Louis Cardinals past the visiting Atlanta Braves 5-4 Sunday. The game was marred by two rain delays totaling more than four hours. Umpire Brennan Miller ejected Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol in the ninth inning for disputing ball-and-strike calls Willson Contreras drove in two runs and Masyn Winn scored twice as the Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep by the Braves. St. Louis starter Sonny Gray allowed one run on three hits in three innings before rain halted the game. He struck out five and walked none. Steven Matz replaced Gray after the first delay and allowed two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Winning pitcher Gordon Graceffo (3-0), Riley O'Brien and Ryan Helsley (19th save) worked after the second delay. Matt Olson drove in three runs and Michael Harris II scored twice for the Braves. Braves starter Davis Daniel, recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett for this game, allowed one run on two hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out five. Jesse Chavez (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits and a walk in two innings. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Winn walked, stole second base and scored on Victor Scott II's infield single. Gray retired the first eight batters he faced. Then Nick Allen, Jurickson Profar and Olson hit two-out singles in the third inning to tie the game 1-1. Atlanta pulled ahead 3-1 in the fifth inning. Harris hit a single and went to third on Profar's single. Profar advanced to second on a throwing error. Olson stroked a two-run single before the rain returned. After a delay exceeding 2 hours, 40 minutes, the Cardinals tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning. Scott walked and went to third on Alec Burleson's single, then Contreras popped a two-run double down the right field line. St. Louis moved ahead 5-3 in the sixth inning on a single by Winn and Fermin's homer. Atlanta cut its deficit to 5-4 in the seventh inning. Harris hit a leadoff double, went to third on a groundout and came home on Profar's grounder, which was mishandled by Graceffo. --Field Level Media

Just before the game was halted for a second time, Olson singled home two runs for a 3-1 advantage. St. Louis went up 1-0 in the second inning off Atlanta's Daniel Davis, who was recalled before the game and made his seventh career start and first this season. Advertisement The Braves touched St. Louis starter Sonny Gray for a run in the third on three consecutive two-out singles in the third. Nick Allen scored on Olson's single off the wall in right field. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the bottom of the ninth. It was his fourth ejection this season. Key moment Winn's hustle led to the St. Louis' first run. He walked and stole second base. With two outs, Victor Scott II hit a ball that bounced off Davis and caromed into vacant area between first and second. Winn never stopped at third and scampered home to score without a throw. Key stat Fermín is hitting .381 in nine games since his June 25 recall from Triple-A Memphis. Up next The Braves return to action Friday when they host the New York Yankees. The Cardinals return to play Friday at Arizona. __ AP MLB:
